Specialty Spotlight: Thyroid Care
San Francisco Thyroid brings diagnotic and treatment together
When a group of Brown & Toland physicians started the Thyroid Center of San Francisco in October, their goal was to make the clinic a convenient one-stop shop for patients seeking coordinated care for thyroid cancer. Today, the clinic houses all the services needed to help identify and treat thyroid cancers: endocrinology, imaging, aspiration, pathology and surgery. “Our clinic is the hub where all that comes together,” said Jacob Johnson, M.D., one of the clinic’s partners. Patients can head to one central location to receive care, often with a quick turnaround. As a side benefit, patients can build a relationship with a small cadre of healthcare providers who work in concert with their primary care doctors.

The diagnosis and treatment of a thyroid nodule is a complex process that requires a diverse team of specialists. Bringing together surgeons, endocrinologists, pathologists, and radiologists, and offering advanced in-house technology, our team will evaluate, diagnose, and treat your thyroid nodule in one central location. Our monthly tumor board of experts will review your complex case and deliver a unified diagnosis and recommended course of action. Not only does this minimize unnecessary confusion and stress for the patient, but saves crucial time for patients with serious conditions.
Identifying Your Thyroid Problem
Sceduling Your Appointment
- If you have identified that you have a thyroid nodule, you or your doctor can call, fax, or send an email through Medical Web Office portal to request an appointment at the Thyroid Center. Please note: The Thyroid Center of San Francisco currently only operates the first Tuesday and third Monday of each month.
- Visit our Medical Web Office portal and fill out the registration and general health forms.
- Have your referring doctor fax all relevant medical records to us.
- Review the Thyroid Center forms and consent forms online.
- A week prior to your appointment, you will receive a call from the clinic coordinator to review your chart and collect the information on the Thyroid Center form. The coordinator will also confirm the exact time of your appointment. Depending on the information you supply, you may have the option of getting bloodwork and labs done prior to the appointment.
The Thyroid Center of San Francisco takes an integrated approach to medicine. Collecting all of this information prior to your visit provides us with time to review your case before your visit. We cater each appointment to address your individual needs. As a result, you should expect your visit to take 2-3 hours to provide each specialist with adequate time to evaluate your case.
You may have a thyroid nodule if you have:
- A Lump in your neck
- Pain in the thyroid gland
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- An Ongoing cough
- A Swollen neck
- Hoarseness
It is recommended that you consult with your general physician before booking an appointment at the thyroid clinic to first rule out other possibilities and determine whether there is sufficient need to see a thyroid specialist.

Your Consultation
On the day of your appointment, please bring any remaining information with you as requested by the clinic coordinator.
You will be asked to submit your insurance card and co-payment (see the section on "billing" below) and
asked to sign the consent forms.
Depending on your individual needs, you will then have the opportunity to be seen by a team of physicians – an endocrinologist, a surgeon, and a pathologist – who will conduct a thorough evaluation of your condition. In order to accurately diagnose your condition, you may also receive an ultrasound scan of the neck, a scope of the throat, and a fine-needle aspiration (biopsy) of the thyroid nodules. If blood work was not previously done, it can also be arranged to be taken on this day.
Diagnosis
It will take 3-7 days to receive the results of your biopsy, at which point a report will be sent to your referring physician. If your results indicate a non-cancerous nodule, a Thyroid Center endocrinologist or your referring physician will recommend a course of treatment. Should your results signal a more serious condition, the Thyroid Center team will come to a consensus recommendation. Difficult or complicated cases will be brought before the tumor board, a monthly meeting of thyroid experts who will discuss your case and agree upon a recommended course of action.
Treatment
Our integrated approach means that the same team of specialists will work with you throughout the course of your treatment. Should you require surgery, our experienced surgeons at the Thyroid Center can accommodate you. All thyroid surgeries are completed by a primary and an assisting surgeon. Dr. Jacob Johnson and Dr. Andrea Yeung, partners at San Francisco Otolaryngology, are experienced in thyroidectomies and will be assisted by Dr. Mark Singer and Dr. James Klein at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC). This combination of Dr. Johnson and Dr. Yeung’s advanced techniques with Dr. Singer and Dr. Klein’s experience and wisdom results in high-quality surgical care you can trust.
After surgery, your condition will be monitored by our team of endocrinologists that initially reviewed your case. You can expect to spend 1-3 days in the hospital. A nuclear medicine doctor will be available if post-surgery radiation is needed.
