Diagnosing Your Sinus Problem

We understand that in order to successfully treat sinus problems, there are three different factors that must be evaluated, each accompanied by a different form of treatment.

Structure. Utilizing on-site CT scanning, we determine if the bone structure of your sinus is the cause of your sinus problems. If this is the case, surgery or balloon sinuplasty is the recommended course of action.

Allergy. An allergy test may be conducted to determine if external variables are the cause of your sinus problems. Treatment may be avoidance of the allergy-inducing stimulus, medication, or shots.

Infection. By conducting lab testing and cultures, we can determine whether you require anti-microbials or immune deficiency supplementation to treat your sinus problems.

Information on Sinus Conditions and Treatment Options

Below is a list of some of the conditions we treat in our practice. Click on the links below to learn more about the condition and the treatment options offered.

Conditions Treatments

Allergy

Allergy is a form of hypersensitivity that triggers an inflammatory response to normally harmless environmental substances. It is associated with many disorders such as chronic sinusitis, post-nasal drip, and asthma.

An ENT allergist combines the expertise of sinus anatomy with the study of allergies, leading to more effective outcomes for the patient.

There are several types of allergy tests that can determine if your condition is the result of an allergic reaction. A skin test is one option, in which a small amount of the suspected allergen is placed on or below the skin to see if a reaction develops. A blood test may also be performed to identify if antibodies are present, produced in response to a certain allergen.

Allergy treatments include avoidance of allergens, medical therapy, immunotherapy, and dietary modification. Surgical procedures such as polyp removal, inferior turbinate reductions, sinus irrigation, and straightening of the nasal septum can increase the effectiveness of allergy treatment.

Associated Technologies

The Xoran MiniCAT™ is a small, upright, high quality, CT scanner specifically designed for point-of-care scanning by treating physicians. This scanner creates exceptional images of the sinuses and ears right in your doctor’s office.

Balloon Sinuplasty™ technology is a FDA-cleared, endoscopic, catheter-based system for patients suffering from sinusitis. The technology uses a small, flexible, Sinus Balloon Catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways, restoring normal sinus drainage and function. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
